Regarding the new policy at Tumblr

image

There are a lot of issues I have with this policy (although I understand, on some level, why it’s being done). This doesn’t really effect this blog right now, however

First, a surprising amount of my content is flagged by the current algorithm on Tumblr as being NSFW/nudity. I appeal it every time, and all but one has eventually had the Sensitive Content warning removed. I went through a brief period of time when the blog in its entirety was flagged as NSFW and I had to appeal that. It’s not totally clear to me what will happen in the future if an image is flagged, and right now it’s mostly just annoying. But if the consequences of a flagged image are changing to something more drastic I won’t be able to keep up. Who wants to restart a blog every time something is mistakenly flagged?

Second, and most importantly, the language in the policy seems to indicate that this change only affects nudity-containing blogs. With the exception of some of the Deadpool MAX posts, this blog doesn’t contain nudity; however, some of the policy is much more vague and unclear. This concerns me; technically, Deadpool is an adult-themed comic. If the site is trying to gear towards children-friendly content only, obviously Deadpool is not appropriate for that. My gut tells me that this is the logical next step that Tumblr will take, and part of me would rather get out in front of that.

After all, why would you allow violent or obscenely threatening content but kick off fanfiction writers? (insert bitter sarcasm and appropriately ironic gif here)

I have a massive following on here and I would hate to lose the community we’ve built over the years. I’ve been kicking around the idea of moving sites for awhile now but haven’t had the time to really look for a new home. I’d like to grow this blog even more (with more Deadpool and comic content/news, more interactive content, etc) as time goes on, and this might be a good opportunity to jump ship and get a new home.

As an aside, I’m not sure if I’ll leave or not; I’m just opening this up as a possibility and trying to get a feel for where you all are at.

SO:

Are there new sites that you’d like to see this blog moved to? Anywhere in particular that you guys are heading to, or will you stick around Tumblr? Let me know! I’m taking comments and thoughts now.

Several people have already suggested Pillowfort (although I believe that costs money – like 5$ a month or something? Regardless I’m seriously considering it) but I’m open to suggestions. Maybe Twitter? Dunno.

Feel free to send me a comment or comment on this post (but please don’t send me a message through the messenger thing – I’m so, so bad at checking that).

Love you all.

Alright, based on some feedback:

Twitter for this blog will be HERE

Instagram will be HERE

Feel free to follow me! There’s nothing there now but I’ll post once I get everything set up.

To be totally clear, I will not be deleting this blog anytime soon (in fact, the above accounts are linked to this blog); just looking for back-up options and giving a place for people who want to follow this blog but are deleting Tumblr to go.

I’m also currently backing this blog up on WordPress just to be extra safe.

Written erotica is safe, so maybe illustrations are safe as well? Additionally, pretty certain the crack down is on pornography, not violence, but the Tumblr algorithm is so frustratingly awful, it might not even make a difference.

Yeah exactly – my understanding is that the crackdown is mostly aimed at pornography. Content creators seem alarmed but I’m not sure where illustrations will land. A lot of them are leaving/have left already, or at least that’s my impression.

(More thoughts under the cut)

My biggest concern is that it’s not totally clear if this trend of censorship (for better or worse) will continue or what will happen if your content is mistakenly flagged. This blog isn’t a porn blog and never will be, it’s not in any danger of being deleted (at least to my knowledge), but it is a blog centered around an adult comic. Will I be able to post any content from Deadpool MAX or any potentially NSFW content from the Deadpool movies? I don’t know, but it frustrates me that this is now a concern I have to worry over whereas before I could just tag it appropriately it I thought it was questionable.

You’re absolutely right with the algorithm – it sucks. One time I had a post that was flagged at least five times; I’d appeal it, and the algorithm would flag it again, and again, and again, and to this day I have no idea why. I eventually just deleted it.

((EDIT to this post: one of my posts was just flagged, even though it passed an appeal yesterday, and I can’t appeal again. There’s nothing NSFW on the panels (it’s Deadpool and Spider-Man in a helicopter and there’s a reference to Nicki Minaj lyrics in Monster? Are song lyrics bad now?) but it says the decision is final so that sucks. JFC.))

And yeah, my comment about the violent content stuff was actually me just griping and adding my social commentary to the mix. I personally think it’s so, so bizarre to have a policy in place banning NSFW pornographic content but nothing changing policies about violent content (something I’ve complained about before on this blog and no doubt will complain about again). This isn’t a problem solely with Tumblr either; we’re in a world obsessed with vilifying sex but laughably forgiving when it comes to violent/disturbing content.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Deadpool and I don’t mind the violence in the comics or movies and certainly not all NSFW content is good content (morally or otherwise). But let’s be real. How is an image of a shirtless, consenting woman more “dangerous” than a gif of a gun being pointed at the user and fired? It makes zero sense. If you’re going to make a policy change that’s touting itself as a way to make the community more positive and welcoming and all sunshine, rainbows, and Good Things, then that change should extend across all facets of the site and not just pornography. I just… don’t get it.

Well, okay, I do. The policy change makes perfect sense if the sole aim is to ensure the app is open and available to as many younger users as possible so that Tumblr can make as much money as possible. The fact that they’re changing their advertisement policy at the same time just fuels this explanation (Young People with Phones: the perfect demographic for high paying advertisers). They can dress it up however they want, but that’s the real reason for the change and everyone knows it.
